Cedar Dunes - West Point Shoreline Protection

Project Background

In October 2020, Davis MacIntyre & Associates Limited was contracted to conduct archaeological monitoring during a new coastal erosion control project at Cedar Dunes in West Point, PEI. An initial assessment concluded that there was potential for heritage resources beneath the large sand dunes relating to both the Mi'kmaw and the historic West Point Lighthouse.

Key Findings

Though no significant heritage resources were encountered, this project is a great example of why consulting a professional archaeologist during development projects is extremely important. Underneath the sand dunes were buried soil horizons that once would have been potential activity areas. These horizons could have held important details in the history of Prince Edward Island.  Without the guidance of an onsite archaeologist, the project could have experienced lengthy delays until a qualified archaeologist was able to be on site.
